ISLAND WILDLIFE

Elephants, sitatunga, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes and other species add a very different dimension to the island experience.

REMOTE LAKE VICTORIA WILDERNESS

Dense forest, quiet bays, wetlands and open water create a peaceful setting far removed from Tanzania’s classic savannah parks.

About Rubondo Island National Park

Rubondo Island National Park is a remote wilderness in the southwestern corner of Lake Victoria, combining dense forest, wetlands, secluded bays and open water within one protected island ecosystem.

Unlike Tanzania’s classic savannah parks, Rubondo offers a much quieter and more unconventional safari experience. Days here are shaped by forest walks, chimpanzee experiences, birdlife, boat excursions and time along the lake rather than long hours on traditional game drives.

The island supports a distinctive mix of wildlife, including sitatunga, elephants, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles and a wide range of bird species. Its forested setting and isolation give Rubondo a completely different atmosphere from the better-known safari regions of northern and southern Tanzania.

For travellers looking for something remote, slower paced and genuinely different, Rubondo feels less like a conventional safari stop and more like a wilderness retreat.

A Brief History of Rubondo Island

Rubondo’s conservation story began long before it became a national park. The island was first protected as a forest reserve in 1928, later became a game reserve in 1965, and was officially gazetted as Rubondo Island National Park in 1977.

Rubondo is also unusual because several wildlife species were introduced to the island during conservation programs in the 1960s and 1970s. These included chimpanzees, elephants, giraffes and other species, creating a distinctive island ecosystem alongside native wildlife such as sitatunga.

Today, the park protects tropical forest, papyrus wetlands, secluded bays and Lake Victoria shoreline while supporting wildlife conservation, forest protection and low-impact tourism.

Rubondo Island Ecosystem

Tropical and Semi-Evergreen Forest

Much of Rubondo is covered by dense forest, creating habitat for chimpanzees, elephants, birdlife, reptiles and many smaller species. Exploring these forested areas gives the island a completely different feel from Tanzania’s open savannah parks.

Open Woodland and Grassland

Between the forested areas, patches of woodland and grassland create important feeding habitat for giraffes, antelope and other wildlife while adding variety to the island landscape.

Wetlands and Papyrus Areas

Rubondo’s wetlands and papyrus-fringed areas are especially important for sitatunga, birdlife and other species adapted to wetter environments. These habitats also give the island some of its most distinctive scenery.

Lake Victoria Shoreline

The shoreline, bays and surrounding waters are a major part of the Rubondo experience. Hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds and other wildlife can be encountered around the lake, while boat excursions reveal a completely different side of the park.

Sport Fishing at Rubondo Island

Sport fishing is one of Rubondo’s distinctive Lake Victoria experiences. The surrounding waters offer opportunities to fish for Nile perch and other freshwater species, subject to park regulations and local guidelines.

Trips are typically arranged by boat with experienced operators who understand the lake, weather and fishing conditions. It adds a very different dimension to a Rubondo stay, especially for travellers who want time on the water as well as wildlife and forest experiences.

Chimpanzee and Forest Experiences

Rubondo’s forest is home to a population of chimpanzees that were introduced to the island decades ago as part of a conservation initiative. Today, chimpanzee tracking is one of the park’s most distinctive experiences.

Guided forest walks take visitors through dense tropical vegetation while searching for signs of chimpanzee movement, calls and feeding activity. The experience is as much about the forest itself as the chimpanzees, with opportunities to learn about plants, birdlife, smaller wildlife and the ecology of the island.

Because chimpanzees move freely through the forest, sightings are never guaranteed. That unpredictability is part of what makes the experience feel genuinely wild.

Safari Activities in Rubondo Island National Park

Guided Nature Walks

Boat Safaris

Boat trips are one of the best ways to experience Rubondo. Guests can explore the Lake Victoria shoreline, watch for hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds, and enjoy the island from the water.

Birdwatching

Rubondo’s mix of forest, wetlands and lakeshore creates excellent conditions for birding. Early mornings and boat excursions can be especially rewarding.

Sport Fishing
