A three-day climb through forest, high-altitude moorland and volcanic terrain to the summit of Tanzania’s second-highest mountain.
Mount Meru rises to 4,566 metres inside Arusha National Park, making it Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and one of the country’s most rewarding short mountain climbs.
This three-day route is the more condensed Mount Meru itinerary, designed for fit trekkers who want the full mountain experience within a shorter timeframe. The trail begins on the forested lower slopes before climbing through changing vegetation and increasingly dramatic volcanic terrain towards Saddle Hut and the summit ridge.
One of the things that makes Mount Meru different is the setting. The lower slopes lie within Arusha National Park, where wildlife may be encountered along the trail, while higher up the landscape opens into rugged ridges, volcanic formations and expansive views across northern Tanzania.
Summit morning begins before dawn for the climb towards Socialist Peak at 4,566 metres. The final section follows Mount Meru’s distinctive crater rim, with steep and exposed sections that make this a physically demanding climb. In clear conditions, reaching the upper ridge around sunrise can reveal exceptional views across the surrounding landscape, with Mount Kilimanjaro visible in the distance.
Because this is a condensed three-day itinerary, there is less time for acclimatization than on the four-day route. We therefore recommend it for fit trekkers who are comfortable with long mountain days or who already have some acclimatization. For travellers who prefer a more gradual pace, the four-day Mount Meru itinerary is the better option.
Treks are accompanied by a professional mountain team, with an armed park ranger required while trekking within Arusha National Park.
Begin beneath Mount Meru’s forest canopy, where the trail passes through one of the mountain’s most wildlife rich environments.
Reach the high-altitude Saddle area between Mount Meru and Little Meru, surrounded by increasingly dramatic volcanic scenery.
Climb before dawn along Mount Meru’s rugged crater rim towards Socialist Peak, the highest point at 4,566 metres.
Experience the mountain’s changing character as forest gives way to open heath, alpine terrain and the dramatic formations of Mount Meru’s volcanic crater.
Elevation: Approx. 1,500 m → 2,514 m
Distance: Approx. 10 km
Trekking time: Approx. 4–6 hours
Habitat: Grassland & Montane Forest
After breakfast, you’ll be transferred to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park, where the trek begins after registration and the necessary park formalities.
Unlike most mountain climbs, Mount Meru begins inside a wildlife-rich national park. Accompanied by your mountain team and an armed park ranger, you’ll set out across the lower slopes, moving through open grassland and woodland before entering the montane forest.
This first section introduces one of Mount Meru’s most distinctive features: the possibility of encountering wildlife while trekking. Giraffes, buffalo, warthogs, monkeys and a variety of birdlife may be seen along the lower route, although sightings naturally vary.
As the trail climbs, the vegetation becomes denser and the mountain begins to dominate the landscape. Continue steadily through the forest until reaching Miriakamba Hut at approximately 2,514 metres, your first overnight stop on the mountain.
The afternoon is kept relaxed, allowing time to settle into the hut, have dinner and rest before the steeper climb ahead.

Miriakamba Hut

Elevation: 2,514 m → 3,570 m
Distance: Approx. 8 km
Trekking time: Approx. 3–5 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest, Heather & Moorland
After breakfast at Miriakamba Hut, continue higher into Mount Meru. Today’s route is shorter in distance but considerably steeper as the trail climbs away from the forest and towards the upper reaches of the mountain.
As altitude increases, the landscape begins to change. Dense forest gradually gives way to giant heather and moorland, while views towards Mount Meru’s crater and volcanic formations become increasingly dramatic.
You’ll arrive at Saddle Hut, approximately 3,570 metres above sea level, with time to rest and have lunch. The hut sits between the main summit of Mount Meru and Little Meru and serves as the base for the following morning’s summit attempt.
Depending on conditions, timing and how you are feeling at altitude, an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru can be undertaken in the afternoon. Little Meru rises to approximately 3,820 metres and provides an additional opportunity to acclimatize before returning to Saddle Hut.
Back at the hut, have an early dinner and prepare your equipment before getting some rest. Summit night begins shortly after midnight, so tonight is deliberately kept quiet and simple.

Elevation: 3,570 m → 4,566 m → approx. 1,500 m
Trekking time: Approx. 12–14 hours
Habitat: Alpine Terrain, Moorland & Montane Forest
Your summit attempt begins in the early hours of the morning. After a light snack and final preparations at Saddle Hut, set out with your guide under darkness towards the upper slopes of Mount Meru.
The route climbs steeply towards Rhino Point at approximately 3,800 metres before continuing along Mount Meru’s dramatic crater ridge. From here, the terrain becomes more rugged, with sections of volcanic rock and ash as you progress towards Cobra Point and ultimately Socialist Peak.
This is the most demanding part of the trek. The ridge is narrow and exposed in places, and your guide will control the pace according to trail conditions, weather and how the group is responding to the altitude.
The objective is Socialist Peak at 4,566 metres, the highest point of Mount Meru and Tanzania’s second-highest summit. Depending on your pace, sunrise may be experienced from the upper ridge or around the summit area. In clear conditions, the high slopes can reveal extraordinary views across Meru’s crater and Ash Cone, with Mount Kilimanjaro visible on the horizon.
After time on the upper mountain, begin the descent carefully along the same ridge towards Saddle Hut. Stop at the hut for a well-earned meal and a short rest before continuing downhill.
The descent then takes you back through the changing vegetation zones, passing Miriakamba and eventually returning to Momella Gate. This makes the final day particularly long and physically demanding, which is the main difference between the three-day itinerary and the more gradual four-day Mount Meru climb.
At Momella Gate, your vehicle will be waiting for the private transfer back to Arusha, marking the end of your Mount Meru climb.
