7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climb via Rongai Route

Approach Kilimanjaro from its quieter northern side on a scenic, less-travelled route with gradual altitude gain, wide-open landscapes and a steady progression toward Uhuru Peak.

The Rongai Route offers a quieter approach to Mount Kilimanjaro, beginning on the northern side of the mountain near the Kenyan border and gradually climbing through remote landscapes toward the summit.

Unlike the busier southern routes, Rongai is known for its sense of space, gentler early gradients and more gradual progression in the first stages of the climb. The scenery changes steadily as you move from cultivated foothills and forest into open moorland, high-altitude desert and eventually the summit zone.

Over seven days, the route gives climbers valuable time to adapt to altitude while enjoying a different side of Kilimanjaro. The climb later joins the eastern side of the mountain near Kibo before the final ascent to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

With Explora V, the focus is on steady pacing, careful acclimatization and reliable mountain support throughout the journey. Your guides manage the rhythm of each day, monitor how you are adapting to altitude and prepare you progressively for the demands of summit night.

The Rongai Route is especially well suited to climbers looking for a quieter trail, a more gradual start and a Kilimanjaro experience that feels remote and unhurried.

Highlights

NORTHERN APPROACH

Begin the climb from Kilimanjaro’s quieter northern side, where the trails are generally less crowded and the landscapes feel more remote.

GRADUAL ASCENT

The early stages of the Rongai Route follow a relatively steady gradient, allowing the body time to adapt progressively to increasing altitude.

MAWENZI SCENERY

Trek beneath the dramatic peaks of Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro’s rugged eastern summit, and experience some of the mountain’s most striking high-altitude scenery.

UHURU PEAK

Complete the final pre dawn ascent to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.

Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Elevation: Approx. 1,950 m → 2,625 m

Elevation Gain: Approx. 675 m

Distance: Approx. 8 km

Trekking Time: Approx. 3–4 hours

Habitat: Montane Forest

Overnight: Simba Camp — approx. 2,625 m

After breakfast, you will travel to the Rongai Gate on Kilimanjaro’s northern side, close to the Kenyan border. This quieter approach gives the route a noticeably different character from the more frequently travelled southern trails.

At the gate, your Explora V mountain team completes park registration, organizes equipment and carries out the final preparations before the trek begins.

The first day follows a gentle trail through cultivated foothills and montane forest. The gradient is relatively steady, making this a comfortable introduction to the mountain.

Your guides will establish a relaxed pace from the beginning, allowing your body to start adapting gradually to the increasing altitude.

By afternoon, you arrive at Simba Camp, where the crew will have prepared your tents and evening meal. The first night is about settling into the rhythm of the mountain, hydrating well and resting for the days ahead.

Highlights:

• Enter Kilimanjaro from the quieter northern side

• Gentle first-day ascent

• Forest and foothill scenery

• Introduction to your mountain team

• Overnight at Simba Camp

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: Approx. 2,625 m → 3,450 m

Elevation Gain: Approx. 825 m

Distance: Approx. 6 km

Trekking Time: Approx. 3–4 hours

Habitat: Moorland

Overnight: Second Cave — approx. 3,450 m

After breakfast, the trail continues gradually upward as the forest begins to give way to open moorland.

The landscape becomes wider and more exposed, with increasingly clear views across Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes.

Today’s walk is not particularly long, but the altitude gain is noticeable. Your guides will continue to keep the pace deliberately steady, allowing your body to adapt without unnecessary strain.

As you approach Second Cave, the vegetation becomes lower and the volcanic character of the mountain becomes more apparent.

You will arrive at camp with enough time to rest, hydrate and enjoy the changing scenery.

Highlights:

• Transition from forest to moorland

• Wide northern mountain views

• Gradual altitude gain

• Quiet, less-travelled trail

• Overnight at Second Cave

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: Approx. 3,450 m → 3,630 m

Elevation Gain: Approx. 180 m

Distance: Approx. 6 km

Trekking Time: Approx. 3–4 hours

Habitat: Moorland to Semi-Alpine Terrain

Overnight: Kikelewa Camp — approx. 3,630 m

Today’s stage is relatively moderate, giving your body more time to adapt before the route moves into higher elevations.

The trail traverses open terrain beneath Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes, with the rugged outline of Mawenzi becoming increasingly prominent ahead.

As you continue toward Kikelewa, the environment becomes drier and more alpine in character. The wide-open terrain and quieter trail are part of what makes Rongai feel so remote.

The gradual profile of this day is useful for acclimatization, and your guides will continue to monitor how you are responding to the altitude.

You arrive at Kikelewa Camp in the afternoon, where there is time to rest and prepare for the steeper climb toward Mawenzi Tarn the following day.

Highlights:

• Remote northern landscapes

• Increasing views of Mawenzi

• Moderate trekking day

• Continued acclimatization

• Overnight at Kikelewa Camp

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: Approx. 3,630 m → 4,310 m

Elevation Gain: Approx. 680 m

Distance: Approx. 5 km

Trekking Time: Approx. 4 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn — approx. 4,310 m

After breakfast, you begin a steeper climb toward Mawenzi Tarn.

The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as the trail enters Kilimanjaro’s high alpine environment. The dramatic peaks and ridges of Mawenzi rise above the route, creating some of the most distinctive scenery anywhere on the mountain.

Because of the significant altitude gain, today is another day where a slow pace is important.

Your guides will encourage regular hydration and steady movement as you approach Mawenzi Tarn, one of the most atmospheric camps on the Rongai Route.

The camp sits beneath the rugged slopes of Mawenzi, providing a striking setting for your night at altitude.

Highlights:

• Climb into Kilimanjaro’s alpine desert

• Dramatic Mawenzi scenery

• Significant altitude gain

• High-altitude acclimatization

• Overnight at Mawenzi Tarn

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: Approx. 4,310 m → 4,700 m

Elevation Gain: Approx. 390 m

Distance: Approx. 8 km

Trekking Time: Approx. 5–6 hours

Habitat: High Alpine Desert

Overnight: Kibo Camp — approx. 4,700 m

Today you cross the broad alpine saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo.

The landscape is stark, open and distinctly volcanic, with very little vegetation at this altitude.

The trail rises gradually toward Kibo Camp, where you will spend the final hours preparing for the summit attempt.

Once at camp, the focus shifts from trekking to preparation. You will eat, hydrate, organize your summit clothing and equipment and rest as much as possible before the night ascent.

Your guide will conduct a detailed summit briefing covering pacing, temperatures, clothing layers, hydration, headlamps and what to expect during the climb.

You will normally rest early, as the final ascent begins around midnight.

Highlights:

• Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo

• High alpine desert scenery

• Reach summit base camp

• Final equipment preparation

• Detailed summit briefing

Overnight: Horombo Camp — approx. 3,720 m

This is summit day — the longest and most demanding stage of the Rongai Route.

You will wake around midnight for a light meal and final preparations before beginning the ascent toward the crater rim.

The climb is slow and deliberate. Your guides will maintain a controlled pace as you move through the cold, dark upper slopes toward Gilman’s Point.

At approximately 5,685 metres, you reach Gilman’s Point on the crater rim.

From here, the trail continues around the crater toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres — the highest point in Africa.

Depending on your pace and mountain conditions, sunrise may begin to illuminate the glaciers and surrounding landscape as you approach the summit.

After photographs and a short time at Uhuru Peak, conditions permitting, you begin the long descent.

You first return toward Kibo, where you can rest briefly and eat, before continuing farther down toward Horombo Camp.

By the time you reach camp, the thicker air and warmer temperatures provide a noticeable change after the summit zone.

Highlights:

• Pre-dawn summit ascent

• Reach Gilman’s Point

• Continue along the crater rim

• Reach Uhuru Peak — 5,895 m

• Stand at the highest point in Africa

• Long descent to lower altitude

Finish: Marangu Gate

After breakfast, you begin the final descent toward Marangu Gate.

The route gradually moves from open moorland back into the dense rainforest, with temperatures becoming warmer and vegetation increasingly lush as you lose altitude.

Although the summit is behind you, the descent is still a substantial walk, so your guides will maintain a comfortable and controlled pace.

At Marangu Gate, you complete Kilimanjaro National Park exit formalities and officially finish your seven-day Rongai climb.

Eligible climbers receive their summit certificate according to the highest point reached.

This is also the time to say goodbye to the mountain team who supported you throughout the journey.

Your Explora V vehicle will be waiting for your private transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, where a hot shower, comfortable bed and proper rest will be well deserved.

Highlights:

• Final descent through moorland and rainforest

• Complete the seven-day Rongai Route

• Kilimanjaro summit certificate, where applicable

• Farewell to your mountain team

• Private transfer back to your hotel

Acclimatization & Safety

The seven-day Rongai Route allows valuable time for the body to adjust gradually to increasing altitude. Its steady early stages, combined with several nights spent progressively higher on the mountain, help support a more measured acclimatization process before summit night.

Throughout the climb, your guides will manage the pace carefully and monitor how you are responding to altitude. Regular hydration, rest, nutrition and clear communication with the mountain team are treated as essential parts of the climb.

Your guides will also carry out daily wellbeing checks and brief you on what to expect from the following stage of the route. If altitude, weather or any other condition affects your wellbeing, the pace or plan may be adjusted where necessary.

Kilimanjaro conditions can change quickly, particularly at higher elevations, so safety always takes priority over the schedule or summit objective.

Our approach is simple: move steadily, acclimatize properly, communicate openly and give every climber the strongest possible support throughout the journey.

Your Mountain Team

A successful Kilimanjaro climb depends on a well-organized and experienced mountain crew working together behind the scenes.

Your team includes professional mountain guides, porters and cooks who manage the daily logistics of the climb, from route planning and camp setup to meals, equipment movement and mountain support.

Your guides lead the trek, control the pace, provide daily briefings and monitor how you are adapting to the altitude. Porters carry group equipment and prepare camp ahead of your arrival, while the cook prepares fresh meals throughout the journey.

This support allows you to focus on walking, acclimatizing, conserving energy and enjoying the mountain without worrying about the operational details.

With Explora V, the aim is for the climb to feel organized, personal and well supported from the moment you enter Kilimanjaro National Park until you return from the mountain.

Camping on Kilimanjaro

The Rongai Route is a camping route, with nights spent at designated mountain camps along the trail.

Your crew will normally arrive ahead of you and prepare the campsite before you reach camp. Sleeping tents, dining arrangements and group equipment are organized by the mountain team, allowing you to settle in, eat and rest after each day’s trek.

Temperatures become progressively colder as you gain altitude, especially around Mawenzi Tarn, Kibo Camp and during the summit ascent. Suitable clothing, layering and proper sleeping equipment are therefore essential.

Meals are prepared on the mountain and are designed to provide the energy needed for trekking at altitude. Your guides will also encourage regular hydration throughout the climb.

Camping is part of the character of the Rongai experience. Each day brings a different landscape, moving from forest and open moorland to alpine desert and finally the high summit environment.
