8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climb via Lemosho Route

Approach Kilimanjaro through its quieter western side on a scenic eight-day journey designed for gradual acclimatization, varied landscapes and a measured progression toward Uhuru Peak.

The Lemosho Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and well-balanced climbing routes, beginning on the quieter western side of the mountain before crossing the Shira Plateau and joining the southern circuit toward the summit.

Its eight-day format gives climbers more time to adjust progressively to altitude while experiencing some of Kilimanjaro’s most varied landscapes. The journey moves from montane forest and open heathland across the expansive Shira Plateau, through alpine desert and beneath the Barranco Wall before reaching the high summit camps.

One of the route’s strongest features is its acclimatization profile. The gradual progression, additional nights at altitude and important “climb high, sleep low” stages give the body valuable time to adapt before summit night.

With Explora V, the emphasis is not on rushing toward the top. Your guides manage the pace carefully, monitor how you are responding to altitude and prepare you progressively for each stage of the mountain.

The final objective is Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, but the Lemosho experience is about much more than summit day. It is eight days of changing landscapes, careful progression and dedicated mountain support from your first step at the trailhead until your return through the rainforest.

Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp — approx. 2,895 m

After breakfast, you travel toward Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro’s western side. Your Explora V mountain team completes park registration, organizes the climbing equipment and carries out the final preparations before the trek begins.

After registration and the transfer to the trailhead, you begin walking through Kilimanjaro’s lush montane forest.

The first stage is deliberately moderate, allowing you to settle into the rhythm of mountain trekking without rushing. Your guide will introduce the steady “pole pole” pace that becomes an important part of the climb.

The forest is rich in vegetation and birdlife, and there may also be opportunities to encounter monkeys along the trail.

By afternoon, you reach Mti Mkubwa Camp, where the mountain crew will have prepared your tents and evening meal.

Highlights:

• Enter Kilimanjaro National Park from the western side

• Trek through montane rainforest

• Gentle introduction to mountain trekking

• Meet and settle in with your mountain team

• Overnight at Mti Mkubwa Camp

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: Approx. 2,895 m → 3,505 m

Elevation Gain: Approx. 610 m

Distance: Approx. 8 km

Trekking Time: Approx. 5–6 hours

Habitat: Rainforest to Heath & Moorland

Overnight: Shira 1 Camp — approx. 3,505 m

After breakfast, you leave the forest and begin climbing into Kilimanjaro’s open heath and moorland zone.

The vegetation becomes progressively lower as the views widen and the scale of the mountain becomes more apparent.

Today you reach the western edge of the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s ancient volcanic formations.

The pace remains controlled because although the walking is manageable, you are now gaining meaningful altitude.

By the time you reach Shira 1 Camp, the landscape feels completely different from the rainforest you left that morning.

Highlights:

• Leave the rainforest behind

• Enter open heath and moorland

• Reach the Shira Plateau

• Expansive western Kilimanjaro views

• Continued gradual acclimatization

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: Approx. 3,505 m → 3,900 m

Elevation Gain: Approx. 395 m

Distance: Approx. 7 km

Trekking Time: Approx. 3–4 hours

Habitat: Moorland

Overnight: Shira 2 Camp — approx. 3,900 m

Today is a shorter trekking day designed to continue your gradual progression across the Shira Plateau.

The trail crosses broad volcanic landscapes with increasingly clear views toward Kibo.

Because the distance is moderate, the day allows valuable time for rest and acclimatization.

Depending on conditions and your guide’s plan, there may also be an opportunity for an additional acclimatization walk around the Shira area before returning to camp.

By spending another night progressively higher rather than gaining altitude too aggressively, your body receives more time to adjust before the route moves above 4,000 metres.

Highlights:

• Cross the scenic Shira Plateau

• Wide volcanic landscapes

• Views toward Kibo

• Additional acclimatization time

• Overnight at Shira 2 Camp

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Starting Elevation: Approx. 3,900 m

Highest Point: Lava Tower — approx. 4,600 m

Sleeping Elevation: Barranco Camp — approx. 3,900–3,976 m

Distance: Approx. 10 km

Trekking Time: Approx. 6–8 hours

Habitat: Moorland to Alpine Desert

Overnight: Barranco Camp

This is one of the most important acclimatization days of the climb.

From Shira, you continue upward into increasingly barren alpine terrain toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 metres.

The objective is to expose your body to higher altitude before descending again to sleep lower at Barranco Camp.

This “climb high, sleep low” pattern is an important part of the Lemosho Route’s acclimatization profile.

After time around Lava Tower, you descend into the dramatic Barranco Valley, passing unusual high-altitude vegetation before reaching camp beneath the famous Barranco Wall.

Highlights:

• Reach approximately 4,600 m at Lava Tower

• Important “climb high, sleep low” day

• Alpine desert landscapes

• Descend into Barranco Valley

• Camp beneath the Barranco Wall

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: Approx. 3,976 m → 3,995 m

Highest Point During the Day: Approx. 4,200 m

Distance: Approx. 5 km

Trekking Time: Approx. 4–5 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Overnight: Karanga Camp — approx. 3,995 m

The morning begins with one of Kilimanjaro’s most famous sections: the Barranco Wall.

Although it looks dramatic from camp, it is not a technical climb. Your guides lead you carefully through a series of rock steps and scrambling sections, using a slow and controlled pace.

Once above the wall, you are rewarded with impressive views across Kilimanjaro’s southern slopes.

The route then continues across a series of ridges and valleys before descending into the Karanga Valley and climbing toward Karanga Camp.

The relatively short day provides additional time at altitude before you move toward the summit base camp.

Highlights:

• Climb the Barranco Wall

• Guided non-technical scrambling

• Southern Kilimanjaro views

• Cross the Karanga Valley

• Additional acclimatization around 4,000 m

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: Approx. 3,995 m → 4,673 m

Elevation Gain: Approx. 678 m

Distance: Approx. 4 km

Trekking Time: Approx. 4–5 hours

Habitat: High Alpine Desert

Overnight: Barafu Camp — approx. 4,673 m

Today you make the final approach to Barafu Camp, the base for your summit attempt.

The landscape becomes increasingly stark and volcanic as vegetation disappears and the air becomes noticeably thinner.

Your guides will keep the pace deliberately slow to conserve energy.

Once at Barafu Camp, the focus turns to summit preparation.

You will eat, hydrate, organize your clothing and equipment and rest as much as possible.

Your lead guide will conduct a detailed summit briefing covering the expected conditions, clothing layers, hydration, pacing, headlamp use and the sequence of the ascent.

The summit climb normally begins around midnight.

Highlights:

• Reach Kilimanjaro’s summit base camp

• High alpine desert scenery

• Final summit equipment preparation

• Detailed briefing with your guides

• Early rest before summit night

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Starting Elevation: Approx. 4,673 m

Stella Point: Approx. 5,756 m

Uhuru Peak: 5,895 m

Sleeping Elevation: Approx. 3,068 m

Total Distance: Approx. 16–17 km

Summit Ascent Time: Approx. 6–8 hours

Descent Time: Approx. 5–7 hours

Total Trekking Time: Approx. 12–15 hours

Habitat: Arctic Summit Zone → Alpine Desert → Moorland

Overnight: Mweka Camp — approx. 3,068 m

This is summit day — the longest and most demanding stage of the journey.

You wake around midnight for a light meal and final preparations before beginning the climb in darkness.

Your guides control the pace carefully as you make steady progress toward Stella Point on the crater rim.

At approximately 5,756 metres, you reach Stella Point. From here, you continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak.

At 5,895 metres, Uhuru Peak is the highest point on Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa.

After photographs and a short time at the summit, conditions permitting, you begin the descent toward Barafu Camp.

After resting and eating at Barafu, you continue farther down toward Mweka Camp, where thicker air and warmer temperatures provide a welcome change after the summit zone.

Highlights:

• Pre-dawn summit ascent

• Reach Stella Point

• Sunrise from Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes

• Reach Uhuru Peak — 5,895 m

• Stand at the highest point in Africa

• Descend to lower altitude

• Overnight at Mweka Camp

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: Approx. 3,068 m → 1,640 m

Elevation Loss: Approx. 1,428 m

Distance: Approx. 10 km

Trekking Time: Approx. 3–4 hours

Habitat: Montane Rainforest

Finish: Mweka Gate

After breakfast, you begin the final descent through Kilimanjaro’s rainforest.

As you lose altitude, the temperature rises and the vegetation becomes increasingly lush.

The trail can be wet or slippery depending on recent rainfall, so the descent remains controlled all the way to Mweka Gate.

At the gate, you complete the park exit formalities and officially finish your eight-day Lemosho climb. Eligible climbers receive their summit certificate according to the highest point reached.

It is also time to say goodbye to the guides, porters and cooks who supported you throughout the journey.

Your Explora V vehicle will be waiting for your private transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower, proper rest and a well-earned celebration.

Highlights:

• Final rainforest descent

• Complete the eight-day Lemosho Route

• Kilimanjaro summit certificate, where applicable

• Farewell to your mountain team

• Private transfer to your hotel

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

Acclimatization & Safety

The eight-day Lemosho Route is designed to give climbers valuable time to adapt gradually to increasing altitude. Its longer duration, progressive elevation gain and carefully spaced camps make it one of the strongest options for a measured approach to Kilimanjaro.

A key acclimatization stage comes on the day you climb toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 metres before descending to sleep lower at Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” profile helps expose the body to higher altitude while still allowing recovery at a lower sleeping elevation.

Throughout the climb, your guides will manage the pace carefully and monitor how you are responding to altitude. Hydration, rest, nutrition and steady progression are treated as essential parts of the journey.

Your guides will also provide daily briefings and regular wellbeing checks. If altitude, weather or any other condition affects the group, the pace or daily plan may be adjusted where necessary.

Conditions on Kilimanjaro can change quickly, especially at higher elevations, so safety always takes priority over the schedule or summit objective.

Our approach is simple: move steadily, acclimatize properly, communicate openly and give every climber the strongest possible support from the first day to summit night.

Your Mountain Team

A successful Kilimanjaro climb depends on a professional and well-organized mountain crew working together behind the scenes.

Your team includes experienced mountain guides, porters and cooks who manage the daily logistics of the climb, from route planning and camp setup to meals, equipment movement and mountain support.

Your guides lead the trek, control the pace, provide daily briefings and monitor how you are adapting to altitude. Porters transport group equipment and prepare camp ahead of your arrival, while the cook prepares fresh meals throughout the trek.

This support allows you to focus your energy on walking, acclimatizing and enjoying the mountain without worrying about the operational details.

With Explora V, the aim is for the climb to feel organized, personal and well supported from the moment you enter Kilimanjaro National Park until you return from the mountain.

Camping on Kilimanjaro

The Lemosho Route is a camping route, with nights spent at designated mountain camps along the trail.

Your crew will normally arrive ahead of you and prepare the campsite before you reach camp. Sleeping tents, dining arrangements and group equipment are organized by the mountain team, allowing you to settle in, eat and rest after each day’s trek.

As you gain altitude, temperatures become progressively colder, particularly around Barranco, Karanga, Barafu and during the summit ascent. Suitable clothing, proper layering and appropriate sleeping equipment are therefore essential.

Meals are prepared on the mountain and planned to provide the energy needed for trekking at altitude. Your guides will also encourage regular hydration throughout the climb.

Camping is an important part of the Lemosho experience. Each day brings a different environment, moving from rainforest and heathland across the Shira Plateau, through alpine desert and finally into the high summit zone.
