7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climb via Machame Route

Climb Kilimanjaro through changing landscapes, dramatic ridgelines and high-altitude camps on one of the mountain’s most rewarding routes

The Machame Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most rewarding ways to reach Uhuru Peak, combining dramatic scenery, varied terrain and a gradual approach to altitude.

Over seven days, the route moves through rainforest, open moorland, volcanic landscapes and high alpine desert before the final climb to the summit at 5,895 metres. Each stage is designed to allow the body time to adjust, with the route’s natural “climb high, sleep low” profile supporting better acclimatization along the way.

With Explora V, the climb is fully supported from start to finish. Our mountain team handles the details behind the scenes, including camp setup, meals, daily route planning and mountain logistics, allowing you to focus on the climb itself. Your guides monitor the pace carefully, encourage steady progress and adjust the day around the conditions on the mountain and the wellbeing of the group.

The seven-day Machame itinerary gives more time to acclimatize than the shorter six-day option, making the experience feel more measured and less rushed. Summit night remains demanding, but by the time you reach Barafu Camp, you will have spent several days progressively adapting to the altitude and preparing for the final ascent.

This is not simply about reaching the top. It is about reaching it with the right preparation, the right support and enough time to appreciate the journey along the way.

Highlights

RAINFOREST TRAIL

Begin beneath Kilimanjaro’s forest canopy, where the air is cool, the vegetation is dense and the mountain gradually reveals itself as you gain altitude.

SHIRA PLATEAU

Cross one of Kilimanjaro’s most striking volcanic landscapes, with wide open views and a growing sense of the scale of the mountain around you.

BARRANCO WALL

Take on one of the route’s most memorable sections, combining steady scrambling with dramatic views across Kilimanjaro’s southern slopes.

UHURU PEAK SUMMIT

Make the final pre dawn ascent toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, standing at the highest point in Africa after days of careful progression up the mountain.

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Elevation: Approx. 1,800 m → 2,835 m

Elevation Gain: Approx. 1,035 m

Distance: Approx. 11 km

Trekking Time: Approx. 5–7 hours

Habitat: Montane Rainforest

Overnight: Machame Camp — approx. 2,835 m

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Machame Gate on the southern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Here, your Explora V mountain team completes park registration, organizes equipment and carries out the final preparations before the climb begins.

The first stage takes you gradually upward through Kilimanjaro’s dense montane rainforest. The trail can be damp or muddy, particularly after rainfall, so your guides will establish a comfortable, steady rhythm from the beginning.

As you climb, you move beneath a canopy of ancient trees, ferns and thick vegetation, with opportunities to encounter some of the birdlife and monkeys that inhabit Kilimanjaro’s lower forests.

There is no need to rush. Your guide will introduce you to the mountain principle you will hear throughout the climb: “pole pole” — slowly, slowly. A controlled pace from the first day helps conserve energy and gives your body time to begin adjusting to altitude.

By afternoon, you reach Machame Camp, where the crew will have prepared your tents and evening meal. After dinner, your guide will brief you on the following day and check how everyone is feeling before you settle in for your first night on Kilimanjaro.

Highlights:

• Enter Kilimanjaro National Park through Machame Gate

• Trek through lush montane rainforest

• Begin gradual altitude acclimatization

• Settle into your first mountain camp

• Daily guide briefing and wellbeing check

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: Approx. 2,835 m → 3,750 m

Elevation Gain: Approx. 915 m

Distance: Approx. 5 km

Trekking Time: Approx. 4–6 hours

Habitat: Moorland

Overnight: Shira Camp — approx. 3,750 m

After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and continue upward into Kilimanjaro’s moorland zone.

Although today’s distance is relatively short, the elevation gain is significant, so the emphasis remains on a slow and controlled pace rather than speed.

The landscape opens considerably as you climb. Dense forest gives way to lower vegetation, rocky ridges and increasingly expansive views across the surrounding plains.

Eventually, you reach the Shira Plateau — the remnants of one of Kilimanjaro’s ancient volcanic formations. In clear conditions, the views can stretch toward Mount Meru behind you while Kibo begins to dominate the skyline ahead.

You arrive at Shira Camp with time to rest, hydrate and enjoy the surroundings. Your guides continue to monitor how you are adapting to the increasing altitude.

Highlights:

• Leave the rainforest and enter the moorland zone

• Cross onto the Shira Plateau

• First expansive high-altitude landscapes

• Views toward Kibo and, in clear weather, Mount Meru

• Continued gradual acclimatization

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Starting Elevation: Approx. 3,750 m

Highest Point: Lava Tower — approx. 4,600 m

Sleeping Elevation: Barranco Camp — approx. 3,900 m

Elevation Gain to Lava Tower: Approx. 850 m

Descent to Camp: Approx. 700 m

Distance: Approx. 10 km

Trekking Time: Approx. 6–8 hours

Habitat: Moorland to Alpine Desert

Overnight: Barranco Camp — approx. 3,900 m

Today is one of the most important acclimatization days of the Machame Route.

You leave Shira and gradually climb toward the high alpine desert surrounding Lava Tower. Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as the landscape turns rocky and volcanic.

The objective is not simply to reach another campsite. You climb to approximately 4,600 metres at Lava Tower, spend some time at altitude and then descend to sleep considerably lower at Barranco Camp.

This “climb high, sleep low” profile is an important part of the Machame Route’s acclimatization strategy.

After reaching Lava Tower, you descend toward the beautiful Barranco Valley. As oxygen levels become slightly richer again, many climbers begin to feel more comfortable.

The trail passes unusual high-altitude vegetation, including giant groundsels, before arriving at Barranco Camp beneath the imposing Barranco Wall.

Highlights:

• Reach approximately 4,600 m at Lava Tower

• Important “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization day

• Experience Kilimanjaro’s alpine desert

• Descend into the dramatic Barranco Valley

• Camp beneath the Barranco Wall

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: Approx. 3,900 m → 3,995 m

Highest Point During the Day: Approx. 4,200 m around the Barranco Wall area

Distance: Approx. 5 km

Trekking Time: Approx. 4–5 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Overnight: Karanga Camp — approx. 3,995 m

The morning begins with one of the Machame Route’s most famous features: the Barranco Wall.

From camp, the wall may appear intimidating, but it does not require technical climbing equipment. Your guides will lead you carefully through the ascent using a series of rock steps, switchbacks and sections where you may occasionally use your hands for balance.

Patience and teamwork are more important than speed.

Once above the wall, you are rewarded with impressive views of Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers and the valleys below.

The route then undulates across ridges and valleys before descending into the Karanga Valley and making a final ascent to Karanga Camp.

The relatively short day is deliberate. Spending another night around 4,000 metres gives your body valuable additional time to adapt before moving toward summit base camp.

Highlights:

• Climb the famous Barranco Wall

• Guided non-technical scrambling

• Views toward Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers

• Cross the Karanga Valley

• Additional acclimatization around 4,000 m

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: Approx. 3,995 m → 4,673 m

Elevation Gain: Approx. 678 m

Distance: Approx. 4 km

Trekking Time: Approx. 4–5 hours

Habitat: High Alpine Desert

Overnight: Barafu Camp — approx. 4,673 m

Today you make the final approach to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt.

The vegetation becomes increasingly scarce as you climb through Kilimanjaro’s stark high-altitude environment. The air is noticeably thinner here, and your guides will deliberately maintain a slow, energy-efficient pace.

Once at Barafu Camp, the priority changes from trekking to preparation.

You will have time to eat, hydrate, organize your summit clothing and equipment and rest as much as possible before the night ascent.

Your lead guide will conduct a comprehensive summit briefing, covering expected temperatures, clothing layers, hydration, pacing, headlamps, snacks and how the mountain team will support you during the climb.

You will normally have an early dinner and attempt to sleep for several hours before being woken around 11:00 p.m. or midnight, depending on conditions and your guide’s plan.

Highlights:

• Reach Kilimanjaro’s summit base camp

• High alpine desert environment

• Final equipment preparation

• Detailed summit briefing

• Early rest before the midnight ascent

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Starting Elevation: Approx. 4,673 m

Stella Point: Approx. 5,756 m

Uhuru Peak: 5,895 m

Sleeping Elevation: Approx. 3,068 m

Total Distance: Approx. 16–17 km

Ascent to Summit: Approx. 5 km

Descent toward Mweka Camp: Approx. 11–12 km

Summit Ascent Time: Approx. 6–8 hours

Descent Time: Approx. 5–7 hours

Total Trekking Time: Approx. 12–15 hours

Habitat: Arctic Summit Zone → Alpine Desert → Moorland

Overnight: Mweka Camp — approx. 3,068 m

This is summit day — the longest, highest and most demanding stage of the climb.

You will wake around midnight, dress in your summit layers and have a light meal before beginning the ascent under the stars.

The climb is deliberately slow. Your guides closely control the pace as you gain altitude through the cold and darkness toward Stella Point on the crater rim.

This section requires patience and mental determination. Rather than thinking about the entire mountain, your guides will encourage you to concentrate on one steady step at a time.

At approximately 5,756 metres, you reach Stella Point. Depending on your pace and conditions, sunrise may begin to illuminate the glaciers and surrounding landscape around this stage of the climb.

From Stella Point, the trail follows the crater rim for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak.

At 5,895 metres above sea level, Uhuru Peak is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa.

After photographs and a short time at the summit, conditions permitting, you begin descending back toward Barafu Camp. The descent is substantially faster than the climb but requires concentration on the loose volcanic terrain.

At Barafu, you will rest briefly and have something to eat before continuing down to Mweka Camp.

By evening, you will have descended almost 2,800 metres from the summit into noticeably warmer temperatures and thicker air.

Highlights:

• Pre-dawn summit ascent

• Reach Stella Point at approximately 5,756 m

• Sunrise from Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes

• Reach Uhuru Peak — 5,895 m

• Stand at the highest point in Africa

• Major descent into lower altitude

• Well-earned rest at Mweka Camp

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: Approx. 3,068 m → 1,640 m

Elevation Loss: Approx. 1,428 m

Distance: Approx. 10 km

Trekking Time: Approx. 3–4 hours

Habitat: Montane Rainforest

Finish: Mweka Gate

After breakfast, you begin the final descent through Kilimanjaro’s rainforest.

The temperature becomes warmer, vegetation becomes denser and the oxygen-rich air is a welcome change after several days at altitude.

The trail can be wet or slippery, particularly following rainfall, so your guides will continue to maintain a controlled pace all the way to Mweka Gate.

At the gate, you complete the Kilimanjaro National Park exit formalities and officially finish the climb. Eligible climbers receive their summit certificate according to the highest point reached.

It is also time to say goodbye to the mountain crew — the guides, porters and cooks who have supported the journey throughout the week.

Your Explora V vehicle will be waiting for your private transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, where a hot shower, comfortable bed and proper rest will feel particularly well deserved.

Highlights:

• Final descent through Kilimanjaro rainforest

• Complete your seven-day Machame Route

• Kilimanjaro summit certificate, where applicable

• Farewell to your mountain team

• Private transfer back to your hotel

Acclimatization & Safety

The seven-day Machame Route is designed to give climbers valuable time to adjust gradually to altitude. One of the most important acclimatization stages comes on Day 3, when you climb to approximately 4,600 metres at Lava Tower before descending to sleep lower at Barranco Camp.

Throughout the climb, your guides will manage the pace carefully and keep regular communication with you about how you are feeling. Hydration, rest and steady progression are treated as essential parts of the climb, not optional extras.

Conditions on Kilimanjaro can change quickly, and your guide may adjust the pace or plan where necessary. Safety always takes priority over the schedule or summit objective.

Your Mountain Team

Behind every Kilimanjaro climb is a dedicated mountain crew working together to keep the journey organized, comfortable and well supported.

Your team includes experienced mountain guides, porters and cooks. The guides lead the trek, manage the daily pace, brief you on what to expect and monitor how you are adapting to altitude.

Porters transport group equipment and prepare camp ahead of your arrival, while the cook prepares fresh meals throughout the climb.

This support allows you to focus on walking, acclimatizing and conserving your energy for the mountain.

Camping on Kilimanjaro

The Machame Route is a camping route, with nights spent at designated camps along the mountain.

Your mountain crew normally reaches camp ahead of you and prepares the sleeping and dining areas before your arrival. This means that after each day’s trek, you can settle in, eat, rest and prepare for the next stage.

Temperatures become much colder as you gain altitude, especially around Barafu Camp and during the summit ascent, so appropriate clothing and sleeping equipment are essential.

Meals are prepared on the mountain and are planned to provide the energy needed for trekking at altitude. Your guides will also encourage regular hydration throughout the climb.

Camping is an important part of the Machame experience, allowing you to wake each morning in a different ecological zone as the route moves from rainforest to moorland, alpine desert and finally the summit environment.
