Big elephants. Ancient baobabs. Proper wild Tanzania. Spend the day exploring Tarangire, where wildlife gathers around the river and some of northern Tanzania’s most distinctive landscapes unfold around you.
Tarangire has a character all its own. Ancient baobabs rise above open savannah, elephant herds move between the woodlands and river, and wildlife gathers around the Tarangire River — the lifeline of the park, particularly during the dry season.
Just a few hours from Arusha, it’s an exceptional choice for a private day safari, offering a surprisingly rich mix of wildlife and scenery without needing an overnight stay. Lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and buffalo are all part of the landscape, but it’s Tarangire’s elephants and unmistakable baobab country that tend to stay with you.
Follow the park’s lifeline, where wildlife gathers around one of Tarangire’s most important water sources, particularly during the dry season.
Tarangire is renowned for its elephants, with opportunities to encounter impressive herds moving through the woodlands and gathering near water.
Explore a landscape shaped by ancient baobabs - unmistakable silhouettes that give Tarangire much of its character.
Look beyond the big game and discover Tarangire’s remarkable birdlife across riverine habitats, wetlands, woodland and open plains.
After an early breakfast, your private guide will collect you from Arusha for the drive to Tarangire National Park. As the city gives way to open countryside and Maasai landscapes, the scenery gradually changes before you enter a world of ancient baobabs, acacia woodland and the winding Tarangire River.
Once inside the park, the day is yours to explore at an unhurried pace. Tarangire is particularly celebrated for its elephants, and it’s not unusual to see family herds moving beneath the baobabs or gathering around the river and seasonal water sources. Your guide will follow the day’s wildlife activity rather than a fixed route, giving you the flexibility to spend more time where the sightings are best.
Along the way, look for giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo and antelope, with lions, leopards and other predators also possible. Tarangire is also known for some less commonly seen species of northern Tanzania, including gerenuk and fringe-eared oryx, while its varied habitats support exceptional birdlife.
Around midday, pause for a picnic lunch inside the park, surrounded by the landscapes you’ve spent the morning exploring. Afterwards, continue your game drive through the afternoon before leaving Tarangire and returning to Arusha in the early evening.
